the vote, they were telling us they had the votes, when in fact they did not have the votes. for a speaker to bring forward a bill and not have the votes is a travesty. and then -- then what they were voting on, that is to extend the tax cuts up to the people making a million dollars, that was not -- i mean, that is not the best proposal. they wouldn't agree to that. they want not one dime of new taxes to go to folks who are making all of this money. we have a situation right now where the speaker's been weakened, and he basically threw up his hands and said to the president, look, there's nothing i can do. >> right. >> so i want you to deal with harry reid, possibly senator mcconnell and you all come up with a deal. and, you know, in a way, that's kind of insulting to us in -- on the democratic side in the house. >> sure. >> we all represent 700,000 people, the last thing we want is our speaker throwing up his hands, not allowing us to come in to do the people's work but particularly, when we have so many americans who could be harmed by our failure to act. and it's quite irresponsible. b

for it. >> good to have you with us tonight, folks. thanks for watching. tonight washington republicans are wasting our time. republicans are supposed to vote on john boehner's infamous plan b at this hour. the house is in recess as republican leaders basically are scrambling to get all the votes. house speaker john boehner pushed for a vote on the bill even though it has no chance of surviving in the senate. it would be vetoed by the president if it did. boehner's plan b. it makes tax increases permanent for income above $1 million. compared to the white house plan, basically, folks, it's a joke. president obama proposed a $2.5 trillion package. $1.2 trillion would come from spending cuts. $1.3 trillion would come from tax increases. plan b only includes $1 trillion in tax revenue and the rest of course is unspecified. it also includes no deal on raising the debt ceiling. president obama's latest offer takes the debt ceiling off the table for the next two years, which i think most americans want. boehner flat out lied to the american people today when he announced tonight's vote. >> pr

him, you betrayed us, you are one of them. do they want to be the person who voted with the party leadership or worse yet, the democratic president, or the one who voted against all of that and stayed true to the purity of the tea party dogma, no taxes, no deals, no compromises, no nothing, period. this is the wall the tea party have raised up, the wall beyond which people who captured. what they campaigned against was spending money on government, that is what taxes are. got it? and that's hardball for now, thanks for being with us "the ed show" with ed schultz starts right now. >>> good evening, americans, welcome to the ed show. i'm michael eric dyson in for ed schultz. the president cuts his vacation short to come back to washington, d.c., meanwhile, house republicans are literally phoning it in, this is the ed show, and as ed would say, let's get to work. >> this is something within our capacity to solve. it doesn't take that much work, we just have to do the right thing. >> six days away from the fiscal cliff and there are real consequences to millions of americans if no dea

him something that would prevent us from going over the cliff. it was in response to something the speaker gave to the president himself. but again, i guess with the dysfunctional republican caucus in the house, even the speaker can't tell what they're going to do because he backed off even his own proposal. >> i know i need one, so here's one for you. here's a friendly user's guide on who has offered real solutions to each of the fiscal cliff issues. on taxes president obama's offer compromise, agreeing to $400,000 as the new cutoff point. speaker boehner tried to sell a million as the dividing line but couldn't get it past his own party. president obama is therefore offering his original position, $250,000 and below. on spending cuts president obama proposed $1.2 trillion, about equal to what he was asking in revenue. boehner passed draconian spending cuts in the house with no revenue component. on extended unemployment insurance, another check for the president. nada for boehner. on the debt limit president obama proposed a structure similar to what republican leader mitch m

with us tonight, folks. thanks for watching. time is running out on a fiscal cliff deal, and republicans are running out of reasons to reject the president's plan. house speaker john boehner left capitol hill this evening and met with the president at the white house for nearly an hour. administration officials and boehner's spokespeople say that the meeting was frank. president obama earlier today spoke with minneapolis television station wcco and left no confusion about why talks are stalled. >> the big problem right now is that republicans in the house are resistant to the idea of the wealthiest americans paying higher tax rates. >> speaker boehner held his own news conference this afternoon. he was there to provide serious answers to questions about tax cuts, extensions to the middle class. >> will you permit a vote on a bill that -- if we go over the cliff, would you permit a vote to decouple that and then fight again on the debt ceiling? >> ifs, ands, and buts are like candy and nuts. pp if it were like that every day would be christmas. >> he sure sounds like a negotiator with ans
